About the Program
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Visual Arts is a two-year degree designed to prepare students for careers in the creative industries through a comprehensive, hands-on curriculum in traditional and digital media. This program offers foundational training in drawing, color theory, design principles, photography, digital illustration, and portfolio development, while introducing students to the latest industry tools and creative workflows. With a focus on applied learning, students will engage in studio-based projects that explore personal expression, professional visual communication, and real-world design challenges.
Students will graduate with a strong, diverse portfolio and the technical skills needed for entry-level positions in graphic design, media production, advertising, freelance artistry, and other visual arts professions. The program also supports transfer opportunities to four-year institutions offering bachelor’s degrees in fine arts, Design, Multimedia Arts, and related fields. Whether students aspire to become professional artists, designers, or creative entrepreneurs, the AAS in Visual Arts lays the groundwork for a dynamic and fulfilling career in the visual arts sector.

Program Goals

Equip students with essentials skills in drawing, design, color theory, and composition to support range of visual art applications

Prepare students to proficiently use industry-standard digital software and tools for creating, editing, and presenting visual work

Encourage innovative thinking and conceptual development through creative challenges and real-world visual communication projects

Guide students in developing a cohesive, high-quality portfolio that reflects technical skill, creative range, and personal artistic voice

Prepare graduates for immediate employment in entry-level positions within the creative industry or for transfer to four-year visual arts programs

Program Outcomes
- Apply fundamental skills in drawing, color theory, design, and composition across both traditional and digital media
- Develop and present a professional, high-quality portfolio that shows a range of creative work and reflects a distinct artistic voice
- Clearly articulate creative concepts, design choices, and artistic processes in both written and oral forms, including presentations and critiques
- Apply critical thinking and visual problem-solving strategies to address real-world design challenges and communicate messages effectively
- Qualify for entry-level positions in creative industries or successfully transfer into bachelor’s degree programs in visual arts or related fields
Admission Requirements
Students are required to do the following:
- Be 18 years of age or older (unless part of dual enrollment) or must have completed high school or hold a General Education Development (GED) Certificate
- Fulfil all WCCCD admission requirements
- Declare intent to enter the program on WCCCD Admission Application or in the Student Services Office
- Complete an Educational Development Plan (Plan of Work), outlining the student’s plan for program completion
- Fulfill course placement requirements based on the ACCUPLACER assessment
