About the Program
The Associate of Arts in Muslim and Islamic Studies provides students with a comprehensive foundation in the history, beliefs, cultures, and contemporary realities of Muslim communities around the world. Designed to support both academic advancement and community-based leadership, the program prepares students to transfer into four-year programs in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Global Studies, or related fields, or to pursue careers as Imams, chaplains, educators, or civic leaders. Through interdisciplinary coursework in Islamic law, ethics, history, Arabic language, and global Muslim experiences, students develop critical thinking, intercultural competence, and civic engagement skills essential for leadership in diverse societies.

Demonstrate foundational knowledge of Islamic beliefs, practices, and intellectual traditions, including the life of the Prophet Muhammad, major theological movements, and core religious texts

Analyze the historical development of Muslim societies, including classical civilizations, empires, and global events that shape contemporary Muslim experiences

Interpret the cultural, political, and social diversity of Muslim communities, with attention to geography, ethnicity, gender, and lived experiences in both global and American contexts

Communicate effectively in oral and written form, applying critical thinking and interdisciplinary methods to issues of religion, culture, identity, and civic life

Develop basic proficiency in Arabic, supporting religious literacy, academic inquiry, and cross-cultural engagement

Evaluate contemporary issues affecting Muslim communities, including Islamophobia, political conflict, globalization, reform movements, and interfaith relations

Demonstrate civic and ethical awareness, particularly in relation to Muslim American identity, U.S. society, and leadership in local and global communities

Engage in applied learning or service, through a capstone project or community-based experience that fosters leadership, collaboration, and cultural competence
